Liverpool began the new Premier League season with a mix of triumph and tears. These intense emotions are expected to follow the champions throughout their title defense, but they were especially fitting on the night Anfield honored Diogo Jota while Arne Slot’s team displayed their remarkable determination to win that characterizes them.

Mohamed Salah was deeply emotional after the final whistle. Just moments after securing a thrilling victory over Bournemouth and mimicking Jota's Baby Shark celebration, the Liverpool forward wept in front of the Kop as fans sang in tribute to the late Portuguese international. Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, along with their children and family members had gathered strength to attend and were greeted with a sign that read: ‘Rute, Dinis, Duarte, Matilda – Anfield will always be your home. You’ll Never Walk Alone.’ It was one of many poignant moments at Anfield as they honored their number 20 and his brother André Silva following their passing in July.

The headlines could have easily showcased Federico Chiesa, who emerged from the bench to secure victory with an 88th-minute volley against Bournemouth. This marked his debut Premier League goal for the club. However, due to a mix of intense emotions and unfortunate allegations of racist abuse aimed at Bournemouth's forward Antoine Semenyo, Chiesa’s crucial role might be overshadowed. Semenyo brilliantly scored twice to bring Andoni Iraola's side back on level terms—a well-deserved feat—only for late efforts by both Chiesa and Salah that ultimately sealed Liverpool's win.

Hugo Ekitiké, Liverpool's recent £69 million acquisition from Eintracht Frankfurt, made a strong impression on his Premier League debut by scoring the opening goal. His skillful touch, agility in movement, and speed allowed him to integrate seamlessly into Liverpool’s attack. However, looking at Slot's options on the substitute bench—limited primarily to Chiesa and 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha—it becomes clear why there is still interest in Alexander Isak. Despite all of Liverpool’s new additions and Bournemouth’s player departures, it was actually Bournemouth who appeared more enterprising prior to Ekitiké breaking through with his goal.

Bournemouth have transferred Milos Kerkez, Dean Huijsen, and Illia Zabarnyi to the top clubs Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain respectively this summer for a total of £144.8 million. Their defensive absence was noticeable; however, Iraola can find reassurance in his team's overall performance quality.

Marcos Senesi was extremely lucky to evade a red card after preventing a clear goal-scoring chance just 13 minutes into the match. As he tried to intercept a pass aimed at Ekitiké, the Bournemouth central defender accidentally deflected it from his thigh onto his fingertips before swiping it away from the Liverpool striker, who would have had an open shot on goal. The handball was obvious—so much so that Cody Gakpo picked up the ball anticipating certain punishment for Senesi's infraction. However, referee Anthony Taylor instead awarded Bournemouth a free-kick due to a handball by Gakpo himself. It truly was quite an escape for Senesi and Bournemouth.

Slot became even more furious when Taylor allowed play to continue following a foul on Florian Wirtz. Semenyo gained control of the ball, skillfully dodging a risky challenge from Kerkez only to be tripped by Alexis Mac Allister. Shortly afterward, while preparing for a throw-in, Semenyo was confronted by an irate Liverpool fan who had come forward in the Main Stand to hurl insults at him. After informing Taylor about being racially abused, the game was temporarily halted as both managers and stewards were summoned by the referee. At half-time, three police officers escorted the wheelchair-bound fan out of the stadium.

Ekitiké put Liverpool ahead soon after the unfortunate incident. After a quick exchange with Mac Allister, he charged at Senesi and capitalized on a deflection off the defender to break free towards goal. The French under-21 star displayed remarkable composure as he directed Djordje Petrovic to dive right while calmly placing his shot past the keeper's left side. Gakpo increased the champions' lead in early second-half action by taking Ekitiké’s pass near the box edge, weaving between two Bournemouth defenders, and locating the bottom corner of the net.

Liverpool found themselves too comfortable, almost leading to their downfall against Bournemouth. Semenyo capitalized on two occasions of sloppy defending—an issue that plagued Liverpool throughout—to bring the visitors back into the game. Unmarked, he converted David Brooks' low cross from the left flank with ease. Bournemouth's equalizer seemed inevitable and came when Salah misjudged a pass intended for Dominik Szoboszlai. Hamed Traorè seized the opportunity by intercepting it and sent Semenyo charging forward from deep within his own territory without facing significant resistance until reaching Liverpool’s penalty area; there, he concluded his impressive run with a precise shot into Alisson’s bottom corner.

Salah redeemed himself with a brilliant performance. His cross created chaos in the Bournemouth box, leading to Chiesa's volley that put Liverpool ahead again. In stoppage time, Salah scored his usual opening day goal with a stunning finish past Petrovic to secure the victory. The Egyptian celebrated exuberantly by his standards, and his tears afterward highlighted how significant this night was for everyone at Liverpool.
