The Premier League's Australian goalkeeper has arrived in the capital.
In search of a new goalkeeper, Roma has chosen someone well-versed in globetrotting. Mathew Ryan will become only the second Australian goalie to play in Serie A - following Zeljko Kalac's stints at Perugia and Milan. Born in 1992, Ryan arrives with an impressive resume that spans five countries and nine different clubs. Eager for another exciting chapter, he is ready to tackle any challenges Italy may throw his way.
After spending three successful seasons with the Central Coast Mariners in Australian football, Ryan embarked on a European career by joining Club Brugge in Belgium. Over two years, he established himself as an influential player and played an integral role in propelling the team to compete at elite levels of competition. Despite missing out on winning the title during his tenure there, Ryan managed to scoop up a Belgian Cup trophy while also making several appearances that contributed towards their progress into quarterfinals of Europa League tournament. His stint playing for Flanders served him well and became instrumental in taking forward his career trajectory further when he was bestowed "Goalkeeper of the Year" award following a stellar first season competing professionally within Pro League arena.
Ryan has been Australia's leading goalkeeper since the 2014 World Cup. He secured his team the Asia Cup victory in 2015 and received recognition as MVP of that tournament. Accumulating 93 appearances, he is currently ranked fifth amongst all Socceroos players to have ever played for Australia; Ryan also holds the record among active players with most matches played.
During summer 2015, Valencia offered Ryan a deal to fill in for the injured Diego Alves. Unfortunately, physical setbacks hindered his performance and after one year he left having played only 23 games - two of which were from Champions League qualifiers. He then moved on to Belgian team Genk with whom he played an additional 24 matches upon returning there.
Ryan joined Brighton the next year and played a crucial role in three back-to-back Premier League seasons. However, coach Graham Potter began to favor Robert Sánchez as goalkeeper during Ryan's fourth season, prompting him to look for alternatives in January after having made 123 appearances for the team nicknamed Seagulls.
As a backup goalkeeper, he embarks on a fresh phase of his career by joining the likes of Arsenal, Real Sociedad and Copenhagen. During his stint with the latter team, he participated in Champions League matches 4 times. After globetrotting across various clubs around the world, his final destination was AZ Alkmaar located in Netherlands where he played for one-and-a-half seasons and made as many as 64 appearances.
Mathew Ryan is embarking on a fresh and exhilarating career move by joining Roma, making history as the first Australian player to don the Giallorossi jersey. He joins a select company of only eleven compatriots who have previously graced Serie A - from Frank Farina at Bari to established names such as Vincenzo Grella, Mark Bresciano, Zeljko Kalac and current Hellas Verona midfielder Ajdin Hrustic.
