Being unbeaten this season and leading Leverkusen towards their first Bundesliga title has earned Alonso the recognition of being one of Europe's finest young coaches. As per bookmakers, he is in line to succeed Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool as they consider him a favourite candidate for the position.
Despite rumors of an interest in Alonso, it seems that Carlo Ancelotti's position at Madrid is secure as the team holds a comfortable eight-point lead in La Liga and he signed a contract extension until 2026 last December. Hoeness did acknowledge their potential interest though.
Hoeness stated in a panel at the Munich Trade Fair that Alonso has demonstrated his coaching abilities for high-level teams. He also noted that there is currently a scarcity of available coaches, as many are already under contract and experiencing significant achievements.
"Clubs such as Liverpool, Real Madrid, Leverkusen and FC Bayern are all vying to secure Alonso's services which makes it increasingly challenging. Simply stating that Bayern is superior would not suffice."
It is improbable that the remarks made by a 72-year-old, who also serves as a supervisory board member at Bayern club will appeal to their new director of sport, Max Eberl. In an interview with German newspaper Bild on Wednesday, Eberl mentioned not wishing to attract negative attention towards Alonso and denied having conversations with candidates - though there were more than four but fewer than forty names in consideration for the "unusual" list of potential successors.
Eberl expressed that they wish to work through their list and have conversations calmly.
Following the recruitment of Richard Hughes as Liverpool's new sporting director from Bournemouth, it is anticipated that their pursuit for a successor to Klopp will gain momentum.
